Lara's Chelsea side had twice led in the match, through Helen Lander in regular time and Kate Longhurst in extra time. Equalisers from Rachel Williams in the 91st minute and Karen Carney in extra time twice kept the game alive before Birmingham triumped 3-2 on penalties.

The final was Lara's first, after successfully making the transition from junior to senior football.

She began her career at Arsenal at 11 years old after being scouted while playing for her local team.

While at Arsenal Lara represented England at under 17 and under 19 level in European Championships, and was part of the squad for the under 20 FIFA World Cup, while only 16.

She transferred to Chelsea in February 2011, where she has become a regular first team player in the FA Women's Super League.

Lara was the second Chelsea player to hail from Medway who played in a big final this summer, after Ryan Bertrand started for the men's team in the Champions League final.
