Paralympic cycling to be staged in Kent

Picture of the announcement of the Paralympic Cycling at Brands HatchThe London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has announced that Kent is to host the Paralympic Road Cycling events.

The cycling discipline events will be staged at Brands Hatch and surrounding roads between 5 and 8 September 2012.

The Paralympic Road Cycling is the biggest cycling discipline within the London 2012 Games, involving 225 athletes from more than 50 nations with a range of disabilities including visual impairments, cerebral palsy and amputations competing on bicycles, tricycles, tandems and hand cycles. There will 32 events during 24 hours of competition spread across four days.

The announcement marks the final venue to be confirmed for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and pays homage to Brands Hatch’s cycling routes, as it was first developed in the 1920s as a grass track cycle racing venue.

It will also allow LOCOG to use much of the existing  infrastructure at Brands Hatch and is within approximately one hour of the Athletes’ Village in the Olympic Park.

Seb Coe, Chair of LOCOG said: "We are thrilled to be bringing such a high profile and exciting Paralympic sport to Brands Hatch. This will help us extend the Games outside London and will give spectators and athletes the chance to discover yet another stunning part of our country.

"Our Paralympics GB cycling team won 20 medals at the Beijing Games in 2008, including 17 gold, and I hope that this announcement will inspire and excite our Paralympians about competing here in under 500 days time. This venue will really bring the magic of the Games to life for thousands of spectators."

The events will  mostly be ticketed, but parts of the route will be free for spectators to line. Tickets will cost £10 and there will also be Special Price tickets available (£5 for 16 and under and 60 and older) as well as Group Organiser tickets for large groups which would see them receive additional tickets at no extra cost.

The event will require some road closures in West Kent, but the county council and its partners have pledged to do everything within their powers to mitigate any adverse effects on local residents and businesses.
