Medway Mile marks the big Olympic countdown

Picture of the start of the Medway MileThe build up to the London 2012 Olympics will reach fever pitch this summer, and Medway will be marking the one-year countdown to the start of the Games in style.

Thousands of people will once again take to the streets of Rochester for the fifth annual Medway Mile, sponsored by Southern Water (www.southernwater.co.uk/).

The community celebration and mass participation fun run takes place on Wednesday, 27 July - exactly one year before the opening ceremony begins in the Olympic Stadium in 2012.

Last year's event featured almost 2,000 runners and walkers of every age and ability - from babies through to pensioners in their 90s - completing the one-mile fun run or walk around historic Rochester.

The aim is to harness excitement about the Olympic Games to encourage more people to get fit and active.

The entertainment begins at 5.30pm with free activities and attractions including inflatables, face painting and crafts in Rochester Castle Gardens.

From 6.20pm there will be fun children’s races in the Castle Gardens. At 7.10pm it’s time for the elite runners and other keen adult runners to take on the one-mile course.

The Medway Mile is organised by Medway Council and supported by the Medway Messenger (www.medwaymessenger.co.uk/). It is completely free to enter and every runner or walker will receive a free souvenir t-shirt.

Thirsty runners will be treated to a free drink at the finish courtesy of Southern Water and its Water Café, where they will also be able to find out more about how to save water, energy and money by having a water meter installed.

Robin Cooper, Medway Council’s Director of Regeneration, Community and Culture said: “The Medway Mile will be even more special this summer, marking exactly one year to the start of the London 2012 Games.  I hope as many people as possible can come along and join in the fun of this fantastic free event.”

Darren Bentham, Southern Water’s Director of Metering added: “We are delighted to be sponsoring the Medway Mile. Last year almost 2,000 people took part and we’re hoping even more will join in this July.”

The capacity for the Medway Mile is 2012 runners and walkers, so register now to avoid disappointment. Use the Medway Mile online entry form to enter or phone 01634 338135 for a written entry form.
