Howard School crowned rugby champions

A strong Howard School side enjoyed an unbeaten day’s play to clinch victory in the Secondary School Games (SSG) sevens rugby.SSG Rugby 7s Final 2012

The school topped the table in the league round-robin competition before going on to beat Sir Joseph Williamson’s Math School B 22-10 in the final held at Medway Rugby Club.

The school benefited from a helping of fair play from the Math School, who entered two teams, one made up of Year 9s and one of Year 8s. With the other participating schools made up predominantly of Year 9s, the Math School decided not to pitch their Year 8 team against the older age groups and therefore mixed the age groups in their two teams.

It may well have cost them their chance of the title, particularly when the Math School B team beat the A team in the group stages. It meant the A team had to beat the Howard School in the group to stand a chance of qualifying for the final.SSG winners 2012 Howard School

For a moment it looked like they had, but the ‘winning’ try was disallowed after it was deemed to have been scored after the final hooter. It meant the match finished in a 19-19 draw and effectively secured Howard of their place in the final.

From that point Howard never looked back. In the final group game they beat Math School B, and then meant them again in the final,  where they ran out comfortable 22-10 winners.

Math School A put the disappointment of missing the final behind them to claim third place with a comprehensive 52-7 victory over Greenacre.

SSG Rugby Girls 2012

In the girls competition, there was a victory for Rainham Girls who beat Brompton Academy.

The Sports Development and 2012 Team would like to thank both School Sport Partnerships for supporting this event and Medway Rugby Club for hosting and staffing the event.

The SSG is a multi-sport programme of events run through the school year for all Medway secondary schools.

It forms part of the Medway Games series organised by Medway Council’s Sports Development Team with the support of Medway’s two school sports partnerships, national governing bodies, local sports clubs and leisure facilities. Prizes are awarded at each event and points are gained towards the overall Secondary School Games title.
