Crash win Super Series

Photo of a Crash player evading a challenge from a Marauders playerWest Coast Crash have wn the first Coloplast GB Wheelchair Rugby Super Series event of the season, held at Medway Park.

The team from Merseyside were undefeated all weekend, winning group A before advancing to the semi-finals.

In the semi-final stage they faced last year's finalists Stoke Mandeville Storm, beating them 58-47 on their way to a final against East Midlands Marauders.

The Marauders advanced to the final after a close-run semi-final against Kent Crusaders. The team from the Midlands beat their southern rivals 46-42, condeming Crusaders, last year's winners, to a third-place playoff match against Storm.

The Crusaders and Storm teams, who both represent London Wheelchair Rugby Club, have dominated the Super Series over recent years. This was the first time in seven years that neither of them would reach the final.

West Coast Crash seized the invitiative winning a thrilling final against Marauders 56-36.

Photo of the vistorious West Coast Crash teamThe Coloplast Super Series is GB Wheelchair Rugby's national league format.  The weekend events feature eight teams who compete in groups on Saturday before Sunday's finals and playoffs.

The teams now move to Cardiff for the next Coloplast Super Series event on 12 and 13 May.

Players will be competing fiercely for points for their teams and for Team GB selection for this summer's Paralympic Games.

The event marked the start of a busy sporting year in Medway which features the Olympic Torch Relay, Olympic training camps and Super League rugby.

The next event to come to Medway is the England Basketball National League Playoff Finals Day, which is being held at Medway Park on Saturday, 14 April 2012.
