Medway Community Games squash success

Group picture of competitors in the Medway Community Games squash tournament 2011Medway Council's Community Games Series for 2011 is up and running.

Medway Park played host to a community squash tournament for players of all abilities on Saturday, 11 June.

The fun and friendly competition was open to adults and children aged 14 or over and was organised in partnership with the Black Lion Squash Club and England Squash.

A great day of squash featured beginners to more advanced players, with the aim of bringing more players into the game of squash and racquetball and offering a taste of competition, whatever their standard.

The tournament winners were Dave Berwick (advanced group), Fiona Sime (intermediate group one), Hamish Sutherland (intermediate group two) and Peter Lodge (beginners' group).

Senior Sports Development Officer Tina Martin said: "It is great to work in partnership with local clubs to be able to offer new sporting opportunities to local people. Without the work and dedication of sports clubs and volunteers this would not be possible, and we hope the community games series encourages more participants in sports clubs and active lifestyles.”

The Medway Community Games is a programme of diverse and exciting sporting activities for adults and young people in Medway.

The Games features a series of signature events to promote active lifestyles and sport, organised or supported by Medway Council in partnership with local sports clubs, organisation and venues, plus national governing bodies of sport. The aim is to provide opportunities for individuals, groups, organisations and businesses to try new sports and enjoy some friendly, healthy competition.

Medway Dragons Rugby League Club has launched training evenings in summer tag rugby, while the next tournament is a 3 v 3 basketball tournament at Medway Park in partnership with Medway Park Crusaders.
