Record smashed at Medway Mile

Picture from the start of the Medway MileA record-breaking number of runners and walkers took part in the 2011 Medway Mile, celebrating one year until the start of the Olympic Games.

More than 2,300 people and four-legged friends took part in the children's, adults' and mass race around Rochester on Wednesday, 27 July.

The Medway Mile, sponsored by Southern Water, has been staged every year since 2007 as part of Medway's countdown to London 2012 and has grown in popularity every year.

Picture of Mandeville, the London 2012 mascot, at the Medway MileIn addition to the races, the crowds enjoyed free entertainment including a climbing wall, inflatables, Nintendo Wii challenge, a circus skills workshop and other activities run by local clubs and organisations.

Milers also took part in two mass aerobic warm ups, including one for the children's race participants led by the LazyTown Fit Kids team. Mandeville, one of the London 2012 official mascots, also made an appearance at the event.

After the mass mile, the audience were treated to breathtaking displays by the Black Eagles display team, two fire performers, an aerial rig artist, the Sagamartha Taekwondo Display Team and a jive dance acrobatic group.PIcture of the firebreather at the Medway Mile 2011

The night culminated in an opening ceremony for the Modern Pentathlon European Championships, including a parade of flags, on stage interviews with past and current Olympic medallists and speeches plus a fireworks finale.

The Medway Mile was sponsored by Southern Water and supported by the Medway Messenger.

The sixth annual Medway Mile will take place on Friday, 27 July 2012 and will include a live screening of the opening ceremony from the Olympic Games in London.
