Medway schools set for winter battle

MFSMedway’s school children are preparing to do battle in the Winter Festival of Sport.

Ten inter-school sporting competitions are being held between 27 February and 1 March, including Champion of Champion events. Winning schools in many events will be vying to qualify their way through to the Kent School Games finals.

The action will focus on Medway Park and the nearby Garrison sports pitches in Brompton.

The week will kick off with the finals of the primary inter-schools football league on Monday, 27 February.

On Tuesday, 28 February Medway Park will play host to the Secondary School Games swimming gala and the Disability Youth Games competition.

Wednesday, 29 February will feature the finals of the primary tag rugby union inter-schools league competition, the Mini Youth Games Hockey Night of Champions event and the league finals of the secondary school games basketball league.

Picture of the 2011/12 Mini Youth Games badminton winners, St Margaret'sThe week reaches its climax on Thursday, 1 March with the Secondary School Games rugby sevens event for boys at Medway Rugby Club and tag rugby event for girls at Medway Park.

Later that evening, the leading schools from the Mini Youth Games badminton event held in November will play in a Night of Champions event alongside the finals of the primary inter-schools basketball league.

The Medway Festival of Sport is organised by Medway Council’s 2012 and Sports Development Team in partnership with the Howard and Greenacre School Sports Partnerships, national governing bodies of sport, local clubs and leisure facilities.

The competitions support the nationwide ambition to create opportunities for young people to compete against each other in sporting events as a legacy of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Kent School Games finals take place in June 2012. A National School Games competition is also being staged by the government in the summer of 2012, with the action focused on the Olympic and Paralympic venues.
