More about Medway
Potential visitors to the 2012 Games need look no further than
Medway as a base for their Olympic adventure.
By the time London 2012 begins, the high-speed rail
link will be in place and visitors and residents will be just
30 minutes from the Olympic Park.
As well as offering fast transport links to the Olympics and
other parts of the country, Medway is steeped in history and rich
in culture and has much to offer as a visitor attraction in its own
right.
Rochester boasts a
castle and England's second oldest
cathedral within a stone's throw of each other.
Medway has a rich maritime and military heritage. The
Historic Dockyard in Chatham was once one of Britain's most
important naval bases and today is Europe’s leading maritime
heritage destination,
featuring
warships, exhibitions and some of the country’s best
architecture.
Medway and particularly Rochester, has been immortalised by its
connections, both literary and personal, with the great novelist
Charles Dickens.
The area boasts a new Dickens World attraction (www.dickensworld.co.uk/),
while the novelist's life, times and works can also be explored at
the
Dickens Discovery Room in the
Guildhall Museum in Rochester High Street.
The area also holds an annual
Dickens Festival and in 2012 will be celebrating the 200th
anniversary of Dickens' birth as part of a cultural year of
celebration.
The area has a wide variety of leisure attractions to suit all
ages, including a full-size ice rink and a dry ski slope with the
longest toboggan run in the country.
For the keen walker or those with a particular interest in
getting close to nature, a visit to the Medway's
country parks is a must.
Contemporary art exhibitions, showing local, national and
international artists, can be found throughout Medway, while the
theatres provide a varied programme of professional and amateur
productions.
Medway offers a fine selection of places to stay
to help you to make the most of your visit. Whatever your taste or
budget, you'll find accommodation
to suit your needs, from comfortable bed and breakfast
accommodation to quality hotels.
